What is PAN (Permanent Account Number)? How to read PAN ? What is structure of PAN?

PAN or Permanent Account Number is unique identification allotted to Assessee under IT act and relevant laws.
It is 10 digit Alpha-Numeric number issued by Income Tax Department.

Structure of PAN:


1st 3 Digit
4th digit
5th digit
Next 4 digit
Last digit
Sequential Alphabetical running from AAA to ZZZ
Shows status of PAN Holder

P – Individual or say person
C – Company
H – Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)
A – Association of Persons (AOP)
B – Body of Individuals (BOI)
G – Government Agency
J – Artificial Juridical Person
L – Local Authority
E – Limited Liability Partnership
F – Firm
T – Trust

First letter of Last Name or Surname, say G for Gupta in case of Individual

In case of Non-individual, first letter of PAN holder’s name


Sequential number running from 0001 to 9999
Last is Alphabetical letter which is called Check digit



 Example:
PAN will look like ABCPG4569Z (it is just random number for understanding purpose, not a actual PAN)
